Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United notched up a third successive goalless draw as Crystal Palace held them in an attritional affair at Selhurst Park.


Manchester United survived an early Palace onslaught, with David De Gea pulling off a magnificent fingertip save to deny Yannick Bolasie’s ferocious effort from a tight angle. De Gea was forced into another key first half save when Dwight Gayle went through after a delightful through ball by Yohan Cabaye.


United had plenty of the ball but rarely threatened, with Ander Herrera spurning their best chance, losing his footing as he tried to turn Anthony Martial’s cross in from 12 yards.


Palace dominated the second half, creating several clear chances to break the deadlock. Cabaye missed the best of them, miscuing a volley just wide from Ward’s cross, before Scott Dann was inches away with a thumping header from Cabaye’s corner.


The travelling United support blasted out "Attack, attack, attack” throughout, as a sign of the discontent at Louis van Gaal’s unambitious tactics, which have seen United fail to score in 295 minutes of football.

Mourinho crisis deepens as Coutinho-inspired Liverpool win at Chelsea

Jose Mourinho’s future as Chelsea manager hangs by a thread after a Philippe Coutinho-inspired Liverpool came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1.


Chelsea exploded out of the blocks with a goal inside four minutes, with Ramires heading in from Cesar Azpilicueta's deflected cross. Liverpool dominated possession for long periods of the second half and scored a deserved equaliser deep into first-time stoppage time when Coutinho found the net with a brilliant strike.


Cutting onto his left foot on the edge of the box, the Brazilian curled a wonderful shot into the top corner to leave Jose Mourinho’s half-time team talk in tatters.


Chelsea rarely threatened in the second half and Liverpool, who should have had Lucas Leiva sent off for two yellow cards, turned the tables on Chelsea with the crucial third goal, created by Christian Benteke’s nod down and finished by Coutinho for his second.


Benteke, a second half substitute, capped his fine cameo with the third goal – finishing low into the bottom corner after Adam Lallana’s clever dummy wrong footed the Chelsea defence. The defeat leaves Chelsea languishing just above the relegation zone and plunges Chelsea and Jose Mourinho even deeper into crisis.

Dan Carter excelled as New Zealand defeated Australia 34-17 in the World Cup final at Twickenham.


New Zealand were on top from the start, forcing Australia on to the back foot. Carter’s ever-accurate boot opened the scoring with an excellent penalty kick.


His opposite number Bernard Foley was on equally good form, though, levelling things up after Ben Smith had been penalised for a knock-on.


But Carter added two further penalties before Nehe Milner-Skudder scored the first try of the final on the right wing, which the fly half then converted to give the All Blacks a 16-3 lead at the break.

Ma’a Nonu increased the advantage with a marvellous solo run shortly after half-time.


Ben Smith complicated things for the All Blacks when he got himself sent to the sin-bin for tipping Drew Mitchell over. David Pocock capitalised immediately with the Wallabies’ first try, which Foley converted. Seconds before Smith could rejoin the fray, Tevita Kuridrani added another plus Foley’s extras, reducing the All Blacks to a four-point lead.


Yet the All Blacks maintained the advantage, with Carter adding a drop goal and a penalty in the closing minutes alongside a converted Beauden Barrett try, and were worthy champions.

David James: David de Gea would not be Real Madrid's number one

David James believes that David de Gea has not yet joined Real Madrid because the goalkeeper fears becoming Keylor Navas' deputy at The Bernabeu.

It is for that reason that James also suspects De Gea will remain at Manchester United beyond next summer, and why he signed a new four-year contract at the club.


On the last day of the summer transfer window the goalkeeper appeared set to join Real until the long-awaited, proposed move unexpectedly collapsed during its final stages.


Even though he then signed a new contract to remain at United until at least 2019, it is widely considered likely that Real will revive and complete the transfer next summer and that De Gea will remain there for the long term.


James, however, despite remaining convinced by De Gea's qualities, does not believe that is the case. He instead admires Costa Rican Navas to the extent that in addition to once recommending him to Arsenal, he considers him superior to De Gea, a goalkeeper many regard as the world's best.


"You look at Navas at Real Madrid, it's no wonder De Gea didn't go there," said James from the Carlsberg Green Room at Ted1s Grooming Room in Soho.


"When you think that Navas is such a good goalkeeper that De Gea wasn't necessarily going to be the number one anyway.


"I think it was possibly a reason, because Navas is awesome. He has been for a few years now. I enquired a couple of years ago to Arsene Wenger, 'Why don't you go for Navas, £8million or £10million buy-out?' He had (David) Ospina on his card, he went for Ospina, didn't he?

"Navas has had an exceptional start to the season in Spain and justified my theory that he is up there, if I say the top three - as a loose number - in the world because he is that good.


"I think he is (better than De Gea), yeah. I think his all-round game, he's got a lot more about him. (But) don't get me wrong, David de Gea's performed at an amazing level over the last three years."


Since Sir Alex Ferguson's 2013 retirement, and to some minds even before then, De Gea has been United's most important player in their attempts to arrest their decline.


It is likely that without his inspirational form over the course of the past season United would have dropped so many points that they would again have failed to qualify for the Champions League, but intriguingly James hinted that he considers the Spaniard to not be sufficiently commanding and that he could be contributing to the numerous attacks that have come United's way.


"I do a lot of analysis and I've got a lot of friends in analysis: I've got a theory, I can't tell you because I haven't got to the end of it yet, but it's to do with a lot of goalkeepers having to make a loads of saves and others not having to make loads of saves," he explained.


"De Gea seems to make a lot of saves for Manchester United.


"For a side that are supposed to be so good, I don't think it's just the midfield."

OUR VIEW

Keylor Navas is a superlative goalkeeper, of that there is no doubt. David James is absolutely right about that. However, Navas was down to be part of the deal that took De Gea to Madrid so James’ theorem that De Ge avoided the move to Madrid in fear of not being able to displace the Costa Rican has little foundation.


Having said that, Navas has been so good this season that Madrid may very well not come back in for De Gea at the end of the season.

Leigh Griffiths relishing the demand for goals at Celtic

Leigh Griffiths accepts that Celtic fans will be expecting him to score against Ladbrokes Premiership rivals Aberdeen at Parkhead on Saturday.

The Hoops striker notched his 14th goal of the season in the 2-1 Scottish League Cup quarter-final win over Hearts at Tynecastle on Wednesday night.


Griffiths also scored in the 2-1 defeat by Derek McInnes's side at Pittodrie in September which took the Dons top of the table but helped by the Granite City men's poor form, Celtic are now four points ahead.


The 25-year-old Scotland international agreed with the suggestion that he is in the best form of his career - "I would say so" - as he looked to add to his tally and keep the home fans happy.


He said: "I think the fans expect me to score but as long as I can play well, contribute to the team and help them get three points, then I'm not really fussed who gets the goals.


"But a striker thrives on goals and I'm scoring goals but also playing well and every game I go into I'm looking to score goals.


"The strikers at Celtic are expected to score goals.


"I have scored 14 so far and I want to hit the 20 mark as quickly as possible and when I step on that park I am feeling that I am going to score in every game.


"It might not happen but as long as I am contributing to the team I am happy."


Griffiths believes Celtic will be on a revenge mission against the Dons who, despite being down to 10 men in their last meeting, scored a dramatic winner in the 86th minute through defender Paul Quinn.


The former Wolves forward said: "They will be coming down here to make it two in two against us this season but the boys are wanting revenge for what happened at Pittodrie.


"We were disappointed to lose the goal in the last five minutes but Aberdeen are a good team.


"They will be trying to challenge us for the rest of the season but we have to create as big a gap as possible and seven points is a big gap.


"But there's still a long way to go and if we can make it seven points before we play Molde (next week) then it will be a great achievement for us."

Simon Zebo's 39th try in 87 provincial appearances proved to be the match-winning score for Anthony Foley's men, although Dan Tuohy's 68th-minute effort set up a hugely tense finish and ultimately earned Ulster two bonus points.


A topsy-turvy first half ended 19-18 in Munster's favour, with Andrew Conway, Robin Copeland and Gerhard van den Heever touching down for the hosts and Ulster's tries coming from Craig Gilroy (2) and Nick Williams.


Back-to-back tries from Denis Hurley and Zebo, just past the hour mark, gave Munster crucial breathing space at 32-21. The visitors ended the match on the attack, but Stuart McCloskey was eventually bundled into touch to signal full-time.


The Ulstermen stunned the home crowd with a try inside three minutes, McCloskey dislodging the ball from Francis Saili's grasp and Darren Cave was well placed to feed Gilroy who raced over halfway to score near the right corner.


Paddy Jackson's conversion attempt was pulled wide by the swirling wind and after a listless spell, Munster responded on the quarter hour mark.


Tomas O'Leary's half-break took the hosts into the Ulster 22, James Cronin provided good support and Conway's well-timed run saw him finish off his third try in as many games.


Ian Keatley's crisp conversion was cancelled out by a Jackson penalty, and the visitors really lifted the tempo for their second five-pointer of the night. Backs and forwards combined with Jackson's flat pass sending Williams powering through into the 22. Wiehahn Herbst then drove up close before Paul Marshall gave Gilroy a simple finish out wide. The difficult conversion was missed by Jackson.


Now leading 13-7, Ulster's good work was undone when lovely footwork and hands from Zebo opened up the white-shirted defence on their 22 metre line again, with Keatley following up with the scoring pass to send number 8 Copeland through for a converted try.


The momentum was suddenly with Munster as lightning quick winger van den Heever beat an initial tackle and outpaced Andrew Trimble on the outside to make it 19-13. Keatley missed the conversion and Jackson did likewise late on, hitting the right hand post after big number 8 Williams scored from a lineout maul for the second week running.


Into the second period, the one point gap remained as Jackson landed a peach of a drop goal and Keatley answered back from a central penalty.


Munster captain CJ Stander grew in influence with a powerful rip in the tackle and some key interventions at the breakdown.


They built enough pressure to force a fourth try as Keatley's steepling cross-field kick was knocked backwards by Conway for centre Hurley to dot down, with TMO Alan Rogan confirming the score.


Passes from Keatley and van den Heever then put Zebo over in the 64th minute, albeit that the Munster out-half missed both conversions.


Neil Doak's charges stayed in the hunt with a well-worked try from replacement Tuohy, as Gilroy and McCloskey continued to prove difficult to haul down.


Jackson impressively added the extras from the left touchline.


However, Munster prevailed thanks to some dogged defending, surviving the added drama provided by their own premature kick to touch with seconds still left on the clock.

Third seed Rafa Nadal was given a stern test but eventually managed to shake off Marin Cilic 4-6 6-3 6-3 to reach the Swiss Indoors semi-finals on Friday.

Steve Evans planning Leeds overhaul after horror Elland Road run continues

Leeds head coach Steve Evans said he may have to bring in up to six new players after seeing his side's winless home run stretch to almost eight months with a 2-0 defeat to Blackburn.

Blackburn winger Craig Conway caught Leeds cold after just 17 seconds when stealing in at the far post to fire home and Jordan Rhodes' low angled drive made it two with barely six minutes on the clock.


Leeds improved as the game went on but although dominating possession in the second half created few clear chances and Evans feels his current squad could struggle unless he can bring in reinforcements.


"We won't get sucked in (to a relegation fight), I've come here to sort it out," said Evans, whose first home game in charge ended in defeat the day before his 53rd birthday.


"Let's be honest, if the actual playing squad was left, it would be a battle to stay in the division, but we're going to address some of that.


"We're working hard to do that, but I keep saying we only want to bring in players who will make a difference.


"It helps if you know they can play in an environment and take the pressure of coming to play at Elland Road, because there is pressure, there's pressure for all of us."


Evans was annoyed some of his players did not stick to the gameplan and said he would be working to bring in players before next Tuesday's home game against Cardiff.


"We're going to try. All you can do is try isn't it? We're going to have to bring some players in," he added.


"We're capable of getting a result or two with the squad we have, but so many people have to give us more."


Evans criticised his senior players and said he would have to bring in "five or six" in order to turn it round, but stressed the club could still have a good season.


"I don't mean five or six before Tuesday and I don't think five or six before the (January transfer) window," he added.


"It will be a massive window to what we do, but before then there's lots and lots of points at stake, so maybe two or three before now and the window."


Blackburn clinched their first away win of the season - their last was at Elland Road in April - and boss Gary Bowyer was delighted with his side's stunning start.


"We spoke about the importance of starting well," Bowyer said.


"There were lots of things said in the build-up before the game about what it was going to be like here, so it was important we came out the traps very fast.


"That was probably faster than what we expected but we'll take it.


"It's never easy. This club (Leeds) has got a lot of tradition and they've got passionate fans here at Leeds, who really care about their football club.


"But the manner of our performance was outstanding and I'm delighted for them because they're an honest bunch.


"They haven't got the rewards that some of their play has deserved this season, but here they did."

Late Dora Akunyili's daughter, Njideka Crosby wins the 2015 Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize

Njideka Akunyili Crosby is the 2015 winner of the tenth annual Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize. The Studio Museum in Harlem made the announcement on Monday, October 26, revealing that it was bestowing its Wein Prize – a $50,000 award won in the past by esteemed artists like Lorna Simpson, Glenn Ligon and Trenton Doyle Hancock – to the Nigerian-born painter who has lived and worked in the United States for many years.

 

According to Randy Kennedy in the New York Times, the prize – established by George Wein, a founder of the Newport Jazz Festival, in honor of his wife, Joyce Alexander Wein, a trustee of the museum who died in 2005 – has been given every year since 2006 to established or emerging African-American artists.

 

Ms. Crosby, 32, who recently moved to Los Angeles, has become known for large-scale paintings that depict African and American domestic scenes. The scenes are visually complicated with collage elements drawn from Nigerian lifestyle magazines, her own photo albums and the Internet, works that, as Smithsonian Magazine wrote,

     "explore a complex topic – the tug she feels between her adopted home in America and her native country."

 

Ms. Crosby’s work has recently been featured in a solo show at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and was included in the New Museum’s 2015 Triennial. The prestigious Victoria Miro gallery in London began to represent Ms. Crosby earlier this year, and her work is now the subject of anexhibition at the gallery, organized by the critic Hilton Als.

 

Thelma Golden, the Studio Museum’s director, said Ms. Crosby was chosen because of her work’s “great innovation and promise” and also because she “truly represents the global nature of the Studio Museum’s mission and reach.”

According to UsWeekly, Lamar Odom is making some impressive improvements this week after almost dying from a drug overdose at a Nevada brothel in mid this month.

 

Lamar is 'walking with help now,' according to a report in UsWeekly. 'Lamar is getting better every day,' a source told the magazine. 'He is more coherent and can talk more.'

He has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit. 'He is doing very well and continues to be a fighter. He hasn't given up once, and this will really help him in the future,' said a friend

'He is getting stronger every day. And has a great team of therapists and specialists working with him.

'He's 6' 11' and weighs a lot, so getting him to walk a little has been really hard.' 

However, the former LA Lakers star is far from out of the woods yet; he is still in 'definite' need of a new kidney, and remains on dialysis after suffering organ failure over the weekend.
