Tottenham beat Aston Villa 3-1 in tough start for new boss Garde

Tottenham beat Aston Villa 2-1 to hand new boss Remi Garde a miserable start at the Midlands club.

Goals from Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli and Harry Kane mean that the Frenchman will be under no illusions as to the size of the task facing him.

Garde was in the stands at White Hart Lane after being officially announced as the new manager of Villa earlier in the day.

But his side got off to the worst possible start as Dembele got the better of Ciaran Clark and shot through the legs of Brad Guzan to put the home side ahead after three minutes.

Alli doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time when he drilled in a shot from the edge of the box.

Villa came back into the match in the second half and hit the bar through Leandro Bacuna with 10 minutes to go.

Jordan Ayew then made the most of a mistake from Ryan Mason to score via a deflection off Jan Vertonghen.

However, Kane put the result beyond doubt with a smart finish in stoppage time to send Tottenham up to fifth in the league, while Villa remain bottom.
